Sergeant Gil Borsch is a main character of the series, and a member of the SMPD. He debuted in the first book, Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief. After Sammy Keyes and the Psycho Kitty Queen, he gets promoted from Officer to Sergeant.

Background[]

Officer Borsch had been married two times, both ending in divorces. He wasn't really a communicator, which led to these split-ups. In Sammy Keyes and the Wedding Crasher, he marries for the third time, to Debra, the receptionist at the police station. A year before the series-start, Gil had been working with the father of a girl named Elyssa, Jim Keltner. He was killed in a bust gone wrong on the West side, and Officer Borsch often has nightmares about it. Some time prior to his debut in the first book, Officer Borsch had given Sammy a ticket for jaywalking, and he thought she looked familiar when he saw her at the Heavenly.

Appearance[]

Officer Borsch is chubby, and shorter than his police force partners usually. He does his hair with Crisco.

Personality[]

When Sammy met the Borschman, he was sarcastic with her and thought she was a juvenile delinquent, often pursuing her for jaywalking. He didn't enjoy running into her, which was equally mutual on her part. He always wanted Sammy to stay out of the cases he was involved in and was often close-minded to her insight.

After Sammy helps him out in Sammy Keyes and the Runaway Elf to expose a crooked cop, he comes to trust her more and is less hostile. In Sammy Keyes and the Psycho Kitty Queen, their relationship develops even more when she rescues him from the back of Tornado Tony's van. He knows that if Sammy and Holly hadn't shown up, he would have been killed, so he's grateful to them. Officer Borsch knows Sammy well enough to invite her to his wedding, and he trusts her to not do bad things that she is potentially accused of. Even though Sammy didn't tell Officer Borsch about her living situation, the Borschman knows her well enough that he figured out she was living at the Senior Highrise. Officer Borsch will not tell anyone where she lives even though he's a cop. He looks after Sammy and wants her safe.
